Hi,

I live in the Vincent, East London area.

The network here for Vodacom used to be brilliant, very strong 3G signal, fast internet too.

Now, I dont know what happened. Its hard to get 3G signal, it comes and goes every like 15 minutes, I cant browse the internet on my phone properly, (I have nokia 5800xpressmusic). It then goes onto EDGE network and then after that it will say no network. I asked my dad (he has iphone 3GS) and by brother (BB 8520 Curve) and they both say they experience this problem.

Is it just our phones or what?

What happens when you set the phone on either 2G or 3G only mode...not dual mode?

Have you logged a call with Vodacom? The easiest way to do this would be to email [email protected] and provide them with the following info as best as you can:

1. Your name and surname
2. Your cellphone number
3. Alternate contact number
4. The exact address/s where this is occuring
5. How long have you been experiencing this problem
6. Are others experiencing this problem aswell....if so..where and what are their cell numbers
7. Make and model of your equipment used to connect to the network

You will receive a email immediately after you send the email. You will then then get a response 24 - 48 working hours later either informing you that your call has been logged or to request more detailed information if required.

When I set my phone to UTMS (3G, 3.5G) it shows a 3G signal, then the signal disappears slowly when I browse the Internet. I also tried GSM (EDGE, GPRS) and the signal was stable, when browsing the internet.

My phone is on dual mode, it picks up the 3G network, when I start browsing the internet, the signal drops, then goes to EDGE eventually, then No Network.

Thanks for the procedure, i will contact them.

Ok...but your phone should have 3 settings.

1. 2G Only
3. 3G Only
4. Dual Mode

Try putting it on 3G Only setting to force it to cling onto the 3G signal and see how it behaves.

I'm on MTN and have the same problem throughout entire Sandton. My iPhone will be on 3G, then as soon as I start browsing it slowly loses signal, then switches over to Edge, and then No Signal. Then, after about 5 seconds, signal comes back - I struggle to browse for about 40 seconds and then it's back on 3G again. Very irritating. Calls are also dropping in sandton like crazy. I've tried another phone too with different sim, same issue. I read somewhere that they have issues in certain areas there are just too many people per cell tower.

Unfortunately iPhone can only be set to 3G on or 3G off - you can't set it to 3G preferred, so it bounces around. Hate it!

I put my nokia on 3G only now. At first there was full reception. So, I connected my phone to my laptop and decided to browse the internet a bit. I download 2 photo's, download speed was horrible ( approximately 20kb/s). While browsing the signal was very weak, it then switched to Edge, then back to 3G. After that i left my phone for a while on 3G charging. When I check my phone, it says No network on it and after a few seconds it gets 5/7 3G Signal.

Well, sitting in the bush (Tshipise, 40km from Musina) and streaming high def youtube at 2Mbps... So your milage may vary..

Saw 8Mbps on torrents in Nelspruit (my phone can only do 10Mbps MAX). So my theory is the Vodacom CORE network is VERY good, but the contention on towers in urban areas is limiting our experience. In places with few users (Nelspruit, Hazyview and Tshipise) I have had GREAT speeds.

But in Centurion with great signal, the experience is crappy early evenings (but does pick up after 22h00)....

I have seen situations of good girls going bad, so a network going bad would not surprise me.
