I bought an Acer Aspire V3-551 in the UK and it has been given me problems from day 1, I got a faulty harddrive msg a few weeks ago and it has been starting up very slowly ever since.

I now get a blue screen telling me that the windows file cannot be found so I'm assuming the harddrive has gone, I'm going to look into my warranty but if that fails where is a reasonably priced good laptop repair place in Johannesburg north preferably.

What I would do is contact Acer and ask them. If I had a fairly new laptop just out of warrantee, I'd rather send it where Acer would send it.

The blue screen could be just Windows being Windows.

Do you remember the specific error? Also, what version of Windows are you running?

Unfortunately I can't recommend any repair shop, because I don't know JHB :P

Yeah manufacturer. Else notebook company...they seem reasonably reliable though not cheap.

Thanks guys, yeah I'll just in contact with Acer and see what they can do.

I don't have the specific error code (I will update later) but it's a blue screen and the error mentioned that Windows X32 file cannot be found so thinking my harddrive is dead.

What is the best Laptop brand for reliability? Non-Mac

Hard to say really. I think it's a matter of opinion. I have an HP that I bought in 2008. Worst freaking build quality on this planet, but 5 years later it's still rocking. However, I wouldn't buy one again.

Ideally I'd love one of those MSI gaming laptops, but I've heard a lot of bad things about them.

Dell is apparently quite good.

Never had a MSI, don't trust lenovo, samsung, sony etc...My work laptop is a Dell and I must admit it has had limited issues

I have used a place called CRT in durban they seemed reasonable mainly had cracked screens done not sure if they in JHB also.

edit: yes they are. but check your warranty first. Acer repairs through acer can be sloooooow unfortunately.

Why don't you trust Lenovo?

A friend of mine has one for work, and those things are built like tanks :P

I had one a few years back and although the build was strong of the actual machine, the motherboard, harddrive and other components all started breaking down fairly quickly.

I realise not many of those are made by Lenovo themselves but I still wasn't overly impressed.

Thanks I've sent Acer a mail and waiting to see what they say but if nothing comes from them then will check out CRT
