Hi fellows

I'm trying to source a good textbook on SQL. I just need an intro one that can also get into the depth of this topic. I will then register for a course with Unisa next year. I'm actually looking into persuing a Data Analysis career then move on later to BI. Even if it's 2nd hand it's ok if it's a good book. Thanks in advance.

You can PM me your details - I have plenty of SQL books in electronic format that could be sufficient to guide you in the right direction.

You can then see which book has the right style and content and then buy the appropriate books as is required for your studies :)

Why BI?

And my reason for asking is I interview lots of report writers / custom devs / DBA's who wants to "get into BI" but they don't know what BI is.

Its where the money is at the moment.

If you're serious about following a SQL career (which is what databases are all about), take a look at UNISA's databases module's book:
Database Systems - Design, Implementation and Management.
Peter Rob, Carlos Coronel, Keeley Crockett

It's an amazing textbook. Doesn't do just SQL itself (language independent), but the fundamentals of databases.

Is BI even the same in every company?

Definitely not....

Different industries have vastly different requirements... even the same industry in different countries have vastly different requirements.

Think I still have a copy if you want to buy.

Thanks guys for your input on this. I've found what I'm looking for

I found Sam's Teach Yourself SQL in 10min a great way to get into the subject.

This was more useful than any book I used at UCT.. http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp

I absolutely agree, the IT industry evolves quicker than any printing company can handle, electronic versions are better and more cost effective. Buy a book now and in 6 months it'll be outdated.

I buy books that look nice in my book collection, but not because I want to learn from them. I started out by using online content and still do today...it's faster and more up to date.
