Goodbye Green ID Book

The Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber, has announced the dates by which green ID books will no longer be printed and will no longer be recognised as a valid form of ID.

Home affairs minister Leon Schreiber has announced that the green ID book will not be recognised as a valid identity document from 31 March 2028.

The Department of Home Affairs will stop producing green ID books on 31 March 2027. “The continued use of the green ID book is irreconcilable with the functioning of a modern society,” Schreiber said.
He explained that in addition to being a vector for identity theft and fraud, the venerable document was also being exploited by illegal immigrants.

Finally got round to getting a Smart ID. I am not with Capitec, but opened an account there in 5 minutes and the ID application was another 5 minutes (there was no queue on the day). I thoroughly recommend this avenue if you don't want to wait in queues all day at Home Affairs.

BS. As a Perm Resident required to show my original doc every time I fly, I asked at the airport last month if getting a new card to replace my book would mean I don't need to present my original document. They said 'no'.

Can you just walk in at the bank or do you need to do an application on the HA website first ?

for this to work the only date that matters is the one he did NOT set:
“Prior to 31 March 2027, the department will enable the remaining cohort of naturalised citizens and permanent residents, as well as South African citizens abroad, to also obtain smart ID cards,” Schreiber assured.

sure bud, it's only been like 2 years since the last time you committed to making it possible for permanent residents to apply directly for a smart ID, nothing has happened ... and now it will get done in the next 6 months?

I am in no hurry to do this, but Google states:
Proof of residential address.

Is this still a thing? How do you prove your address? I used to get printed municipal statements, but everything is electronic nowadays. Are we going to end up with tens of thousands of 'stateless' residents, who cannot prove their details?

print out the electronic version, it's stupid, but it works
some still insist on a certified document, so print two copies and go to the cop shop, even dumber, but also works

You go to a police station and swear under oath on an affidavit.

The green mamba will never die

Both my parents are permanent residents and they got their Smart IDs last year.

Didn't have to prove anything at Capitec.
