It is with a touch of sadness that I today say goodbye to Telkom's ADSL. I know they come in for a great deal of criticism and that most of it is well-founded, but In all honesty I cannot complain. I've been a loyal Telkom customer ever since the time when 64Kb/s dial-up was state-of the-art, subsequently upgraded to 384Kb/s ADSL, and have generally been very satisfied, especially w.r.t. the dependability of the service.

But Telkom really need to keep their act together: how can I resist the CellC offering which is 10 times as fast (not only in theory but in practice) and at a third of the price? I've been using the black speedstick for a few weeks now, and am very satisfied with the performance and reliability, so the time has come to give notice to Telkom. Au revoir Telkom, R.I.P.

64k ... state of the art ... lol.

I still have my Hayes Express 96 and my super fast USRobotics Sportster 14400 modems, in their original boxes .... ahh now that was speedy!

man im doing the exact opposite now
im saying goodbye to my whoosh, and hello to adsl.

the whoosh in parts of cape town is just really bad. cant even get up to 2gigs usage per month on my 5gig account, even with torrents running through the night. it just goes to EDGE every 2 minutes.

wish i could stay with Cell c, but glad its working out for you.

Do you perhaps have a USR Courier 56K ALWAYS wanted one of those -- the "Rolls-Royce" of modems.

Dial-Up ISP's of those days used them in racks.

i had one i was given when the guys at 'le club internet' upgraded their "rack" to the newer flex X2 modems. you should have seen the special box they ran them on, had 20 com ports and a whole 8 meg of ram! :)

anyway if you see yourself using more than it's tiny cap, woosh ends up costing quite a bit

Dropping ADSL for cellular to get away from Telkom = cutting off your nose to spite your face.

the white US Robotics external serial-cable Fax modems were the bomb =) Any modem, even pci (conexant etc), would dial up at like no more than 33kb/s on my line back in the day and latency would be no less than 160-190ms regardless of modem, EXCEPT for the US Robotics faxmodem, which would give like 110-130ms ping and like 48+kb/s rates... nice to think back, but as much as the world seems to be going downhill in many respects, technology certainly isn't... <3 ADSL. Great to hear your success with CellC, but 2GB~ a month just won't cut it for many of us ADSL diehards =) Once (if) the prices for wireless can compete with Telkom's DSL, then we can expect things to change radically

also cancelled all my Telkom stuff today, after reporting a line fault once too many times since 17Feb and having to deal with arrogant operators telling me they can see no problem - my 5GB Cell C is working very well so far and probably 20-30 times the speed of my ADSL (when it worked).

Also a bit sad, but I think that will go away VERY SOON!

Just wondering: my Whooosh was also not so great, until I used a USB extension cable so that I can place the speedstick in a better position, at this moment it's running at 92% signal strength, and downloading at speeds of >2GB/s - good enough for me.

if you recieved good service so far, why change? i don`t understand. mobile internet is not so reliable.

I lol'd last week when telkom techy came out to look at my broken (for 4 days) dsl connection. And he actually was excited when he told me how much FASTER the 384kbps dsl was compared to dial up...

Yes.. It is really a great improvement over dial up. But sadly we aren't back in 1990 anymore. Its 20 years later and you might do well to catch up old man >.>

Okay man, sorry for the typo - it should of course have been 2Gb/s :erm:

Uh - my mistake - please change that to 2Mb/s....:o
