I can't work out what is actually backed up to your Google account if you sync app data, I always find only some of the app settings get synced when you install the same app on a new phone, which makes it rather useless, I still have to go and hunt through the app settings to make sure it's setup the way I need it to be.

Anyone know conclusively what app data is backed up?

This is the reason I love Titanium, flawless back of the app and data, one touch and all is gold! New phone has no root though :(

Yeah, it's very erratic. Haven't figured out the Rhyme or Reason yet...

If you have a Samsung device, make sure that your are logged into your Samsung account and use that backup feature as well.
Vodacom/Vodafone also has their own backup to the cloud feature, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Weird that, you would think Google of all people would be able to implement that reasonably well. Damn irritating, I long for Titanium, I could get a new device and half an hour later it's tweaked to perfection.

Thinking of possibly taking a chance and rooting my new phone, Titanium and Adaway, bliss!

Google providers a feature and a capability, it is up to the individual app developers as to how it is actually used. What an abbey backs up with its data is determined by why the developer chose to code it to backup.

Cannot blame google for developers half assed coding

Nothing? At lease that's been the case for me across the few moves I've made. I'd consider it useless if not for the ability of synching calendar entries between devices.
Then again I'm talking mainly about games which all require their own separate account with the dev or occassionally save progress to Facebook or Google+

Anyone have any tips on how to transfer app settings or is the brute force method, ie hunting through all the settings menus the only way?
