Good luck with that. Many past extensions tried to compete or even do away with .com, net or org - they all failed. So will the new ones.

I can imagine China would be only overjoyed if some of ICANN's functions were transferred to governments. It would give them another pair of internet-shackles to use on their people.

My thoughts as well. Unless you have an uber cheap/easy to remember/short to type suffix with lots of potential users.
