Google announces Project Tango 3D smartphone platform

This sentence is a bit ambiguous, but I assume it's referring to the prototypes they currently have. This sounds fantastic, but also expensive. It also seems a bit extreme to figure out the current position in 3D space. Maybe they mean that they can build a 3D map of the surrounding area, such as the example of knowing where a specific product is in a store. Someone would have had to have had the phone in the area to capture the product.

That all said, it sounds like tech is coming along nicely. Welcome to the future!
 
Yeah I'm hoping this is the next big thing, really interesting technology if the video is to be somewhat believed.
 
I love the possibilities and potential

Also some interesting scenarios (one example: videocam spectacles and push advertising in public toilets) and some more sinister possibilities too

Key question is whether it will benefit the average South African, or increase the digital divide even more?
