The answer is in the article you posted.

It is obvious why Google went for Songza, they use the users input and situation rather than algorithms based on popularity which as we all know is Googles strong point and never ending quest for relevant advertising

It is strange because they seem to be spot on with their Ads based on the users liking.
And it is rumored they bought Songza for $35Million
