So I'm looking to make my old smart TV a Samsung series 8 quantum dot (2016) smarter with the newer apps. As new Gen apps are dropping support for older TVs.

Someone advised me to buy a google chrome cast as it is "pretty epic" according to them.

I do have a xiomi 4k stick for my other TV which I used to get disney plus and was too lazy to buy another one for my other TV.

Some advise would be appreciated. Should I go for the chromcast if so which one ?

You should go for the Apple TV and just stop this other nonsense.

The Chromecast is by far the best bang for buck streaming device.

OP- you can't go wrong with the Chromecast with Google TV. It's far superior to the Xiaomi sticks out there.

That said, I've owned a couple Chromecasts before and they work very well for what they are. Not sure about the latest, can only assume it's even better.

Google TV is very cool - albeit we don’t support all the features yet. Local devices don’t have yet and still use Android TV.

But every device has a pro and con.

The Xiaomi stick (or box) has Chromecast built in so right there it is superior to a straight Chromcast device. Literally the same thing. And there is way more local support and spare parts e.g. remotes in SA. And it is fully certified with every app you want it to be so it just works without fuss.

Just get another one and it will likely be a newer and better version as well. No brainer in my opinion.

I need something simple and easy to use I'm getting old  and technology seems to be improving at a faster rate than I can keep up with

The thread is about the Chromecast with Google TV which is different to the old cromecast device. It also has the ChromeCast built in but then the full Google TV device as well.
@RiaX
Google TV on the Chromecast is better, I have played with both. (I'm not saying Xiaomi is bad)
The new Chromecast is faster and gets updates ahead of any of the other Android TV devices.
Its also better than Apple TV in that you can easily side load android apps and so can basically run anything on it. I run a VPN and use many region blocked apps.
Its compact and can be expanded with any USB C hub. So can add on LAN and additional storage.

The issue I had with Chromecast with Googletv is that some of the apps like DSTV was not supported. Thus, you better off with any new Android tv box or a Xiaomi 4k tv stick

I'm not sure about the updates.

When I checked it lacked AV1 and was still on Android TV 10 - while 3rd party devices already had that.

But I must admit it’s one of the few Google products that enjoys pretty underwhelming software support.

The Chromecast lineup has a history of inconsistent software updates, unlike their Pixel counterparts that have a distinct software support plan.

The base Android TV 10 OS remains unchanged since debut. This is despite the release of both Android 11 and Android 12 for TV. The former OS is already available on the Shield TV, but not without its share of issues.

For a device with apps that store personal user information, at least having access to regular security patches should be the bare minimum. But for nearly two years, the 4th-gen Chromecast has bagged less than five updates

However, Google shouldn’t be playing catch-up to third-party vendors when it comes to software updates.

I think there was a particular issue with 11 - so probably why they are going straight to 12.

I have it installed but again, you can side load any android app.

That's weird .

Isn't the Playstore the same, as long as the region is the same ?

Why not look at the Nova then ?

Android TV 11
AV1 codec with the latest SoC
Ethernet Port
16GB Storage

The remote is the newest from Google too

@RiaX This is also an excellent option. Probably the best option.

I would get this.
