Google Chrome extension turned users into a DDoS botnet

Guess I should tell my mother to uninstall it.

I also used it in a sandboxed environment before I started using UnoDNS. I used the Chrome extension variant. I didn't trust this tool from the start, but it worked as expected for a "free" service.

Yes, it worked well and always told my mother to switch it off when she wasn't using it.

Tbh I never even questioned how it worked, now that I know it's very scary.

It was fairly obvious that it was a peer to peer based service, and that resources were shared among users. I had just assumed that there was a "free pool" and a "premium pool". I made the assumption that the premium pool had additional servers for extra bandwidth, while the free pool was purely peer to peer.

I never really thought about the consequences of sharing resources though, but was smart enough to keep it isolated.

Uno FTW! Going to uninstall the last traces i ever installed anywhere

Wow, Unotelly didn't waste any time. Got this email from them:
If something is free, do you trust it?

The Verge recently reported that a browser plugin called Hola is selling users’ Internet connection to third parties via their Luminati brand. Opening up your Internet connection to third parties represents a number of risks, including the potential to have your connection used for hacking and illegal activities.

At UnoTelly, we care about our customers and are committed to providing a quality, secure service. We would never sell our users’ data or Internet connection to a third party. We are very thankful to all of our loyal customers that understand the value and security that we provide.
