Google Chrome memory usage and battery drain reduced

About time.

Still not enough for me to make the switch due to certain addons being impossible to have, but at least they are addressing the memory issue.

“With Gmail, for example, we can free up nearly a quarter of the memory used by the tab.”

Yeah maybe severing those ads in gmail would also help

32GB Ram + a SSD best decision I have made in my whole life

100 Chrome tabs open? Never heard of her

I find CPU usage of Chrome more of a problem than memory. If one could disable non open tabs to use 0% CPU it would help

Great, let's use a 100x more memory and then save you 10%.

How about also doing something about each tab running in a separate process and make it more reliable instead.

It's designed that way so that one hanging web page don't hang or crash all your tabs. I think it's about 3 tabs runs in a one process. Over above that chrome itself and addons run in their own processes.

I know why it does that, but it's a lazy workaround. One thread per tab is acceptable. One process per tab is not. Chrome is the only program which does something like that instead of fixing its reliability issues.

Here's the lowdown. Opera crash so rarely that I can keep it open for weeks until I get to that one website. Chrome tabs crash so often that they still bring down the whole browser more often than Opera did and it's partly because of this workaround that uses all the memory. Chrome can't handle even a 10th of the tabs Opera can without crashing.

I thought Opera uses the Chrome engine?

But I can confirm though I always have atleast 20-30 tabs open on my Opera with just 2gb ram and it never crashes,EVER.

It does slow down sometimes though and I've tried installing 1 x 4gb ddr 2 stick to replace my 2 x 1gb but the pc just didn't wanna boot with one stick.:erm:

When you have RAM for fun then ya it doesn't affect you, when you're working it affects you big time.

I was referring to the old Opera. The crashing thing may just be due to the browser implementation. One thing's for sure, if you use up all the memory something's gonna give and that is Chrome's main problem.
