Google Chromecast down for 12 hours

Google Chromecast and Home devices suffered extended downtime on 27 June 2018, The Guardian reported.

As more device owners reported problems, it became evident the issue was not isolated.

It affected both of my Chromecasts last night. I thought it could either be something with the router or communication on the Chromecast Google side.

The native casting button on apps would not engage/lock when pressed and or was missing and nothing happened on screen - the screensaver photos however continued to download and change.

The Google Home app could not find any compatible devices on the WiFi network.

Not sure WTF Google is doing but their devices have been plagued by issues lately. Their "always on" voice devices (like your phone, Google Home etc.) also kill your network (depending on your router) by overloading your router with packets that are buffered when these devices go into sleep mode then wake up.
My Google home has turned into a useless turd lately, voice recognition barely works and there's always issues with the damn thing not being able to competently do the simplest of tasks like playing my thumbs up playlist or turning the lights on/off.

And there I was blaming the wife for messing up the 2 Chromecasts!! Oops! I'll apologize and take her to breakfast....

Now-now, let bygones be bygones.
Best just to leave it at that...and never speak of this again.
Ever.

;) :D

I'm probably just stupid, but I though that Chromecast was local - as in since it's connected to your Home network, it shouldn't be affected in this way.

Was actually irrelevant..

Devices disappeared from my Casting list....

Nothing is local with a Chromecast. When you tell it to play a clip or whatever it gets an instruction to stream that video directly from the source (YouTube, etc.)

That's why you can start a cast and walk away without it stopping.

Only exception would be some media players, that turn your phone into the source broadcaster. But those are exceptions more than anything else as it will kill your phone battery.

Depends if it's local media or in the cloud.

Sure it still needs an internet connection even when consuming local media. How else for the parasite to harvest data to use to sell off ads - a bit like how the technocore worked in hyperion google is. All tech companies really.
