Google close to acquiring HTC assets

Alphabet Inc.’s Google is close to acquiring assets from Taiwan’s HTC Corp., according to a person familiar with the situation, in a bid to bolster the internet giant’s nascent hardware business.

I honestly don't get this... They got burnt with Motorola... It only makes sense if HTC has a Significant patent pool

Didn't they buy Motorola for mainly their patents too? A bit late to the party on the hardware side though unless they bring out something as revolutionary as the first iPhone.

They're no longer dependant on just Samsung for mobile revenue now that Huawei and Xiaomi are challenging Samsung.

They should make low end, mid range and top end phones (3 models of pixel phones) that get pure android updates for 4 years. (Or however long the hardware can handle the software.) Then they should make sure that these phones are available to everyone on the planet.

That's what they should do.

This was a very limited transaction and Google didn't aquire HTC or any of its physical assets from what it seems

Looks as if they bought the "Pixel" team and have access to the patent pool (but didn't buy it either)
