I don't know if this is the correct place to ask, but can anyone tell me what the hell is going on.

I have been using Google earth for years, and then when I switched to W7 a couple of months back, I downloaded it again, and it has been working perfectly.

This afternoon, I wanted to find a particular place, and suddenly the shortcut has disappeared from my desktop. I then checked downloaded files and GE is there. Anyway, I clicked on that, and it then downloaded a new version, once again without shortcut.

If i go to downloads, it says that I have downloaded it 3 times...if I go to programs, it says that it's there, but if I click on it in that mode, it asks me if I want to uninstall it.

I am now totally confused, and cannot find it at all!

HELP!!....please...:crying:

Hmm, after reading your post I noticed my desktop icon is also gone. It's however still in the menu though and according to Google Updater it installed a new version yesterday 17/04/10. My Firewall also asked to accept changes for the new version when I tried to open the new version.

I would just uninstall it and then reinstall it. Should work.

Bugger!!

Just googled that and it seems to be a common issue with Win7 but there seems to be a solution.

1. Go to Start > Run and type in the following and then press OK: regedit Go to Start> Run and type in the following and then press OK: regedit
2. 2nd Find the following reg key: Find the following reg key:

For Vista: The value of 'ImageState' in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ For Vista: The value of 'ImageState' in HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Setup \ State State
For XP: The value of 'AuditInProgress' in HKLM\System\Setup For XP: The value of 'AuditInProgress' in HKLM \ System \ Setup
For Windows 7 its similar: The value of 'ImageState' in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State

3. 3rd Right click the reg key and select Modify Right click the reg key and select Modify
4. 4th Delete the value then press OK. Delete the value then press OK.

Again, modify reg keys only if you're comfortable.

Type in "regedit" without the quotation marks.

Next you have to find/search for the "ImageState" reg key which is located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup\State

Once you have found "ImageState" right-click on it and select "Value", delete whatever value it has and click on "OK"

Sorry but I am probably confusing myself.

I presume I have to type "regedit" into the box bottom left. I do that, hit enter, and nothing happens...they tell you to click OK...how the hell do you do that???

Sorry, don't have Win7 installed so I'm feeling in the dark.

If you go Start, the Run you should have a spot to type in "regedit". If it does nothing it probably requires you to have admin rights so you might have to log out of your normal user account and then log in with the administrator account to perform the changes.

Ohhhhh dear!!

I stopped at the following point: Modifying your registry is some pretty serious business. If you are not comfortable with doing it, or assessing the potential risks, don’t do it.

Guess I will have to live without GE until an easy way pops up as to how to download it!

Yes, there are risks involved if you do the wrong things, thats why you always export/backup the registry before making changes.

You can get to registry editor by clicking the Start Menu > Run > Type regedit on the text box.

Yes. There are risks when editing registries. It can even make your computer run weird (I have experienced that). So it's better if you back up your settings:
Here's a way to back it up: http://crackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=201 and restore it: http://crackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=202
