Big news!

Google finally lets you change your Gmail address

Google is now finally letting you change your Gmail address, the part before @gmail.com. This is currently rolling out in the US only, but hopefully will make it to other countries as well in the near future.

The company has published the quick video embedded below that tells you exactly what you need to do.

Basically, go to your Google Account settings, and tap Personal info, then Email, then Google Account email. Then you should see a big blue button saying "Change Google Account email". Tap it, and pick a new email.

The original address, the one you're replacing, will remain on your account as an alternate, so those emailing you at that address will still get through. The one significant caveat here is that you can only perform this change once every 12 months - so make sure you like the new email you pick, otherwise it's going to be a long wait before you can change it again.

That’s cool.

I joined Gmail when it was still in beta and you needed an invitation. So my chosen email was available ([email protected]) no funny characters or numbers. So no reason to change.

However I get emails addressed to firstNameLastName@.

Google later confirmed that the period in my email address makes no difference. Fun.

Anyway I digress. Good on Google.

Oh, frak.

All those BS google spammers with infectious payloads just got handed a gift.

Time to really motivate blocking gmail in bulk.

It's not really changing your email address, it's a email alias which is so old. You can so use free services like duck.com to hide your email.

I used the name.surname that they offered me when I registered in 2005. I see no need to change that after all these years.

Plus, since I have a rather unusual name and surname, if someone asks me to spell it I just say "my name dot surname@gmail.
com"

Is there anyway to access this if you aren't in the US?
