Google introduces the Googlebook, an Android-based laptop

Looks quite good.
While individual machine designs will vary based on manufacturer, all Googlebooks will include a signature “Glowbar” that illuminates when the laptops are powered on.
Uhm, no thanks.
Asustek Computer, better known as ASUS, and Acer have also signed on to release Googlebook hardware.
Interesting.
Google has a chance to build AI “into the laptop in a different way that no one else has really hit on,” Samat added.
Oh, FFS! More pushed down your throat, AI slop.

Even with the arrival of Googlebooks, ChromeOS isn’t going anywhere. “Sixty-plus percent of the education market in the US is Chromebooks,” Samat said. “We think it’s really a good fit there.”

So, expecting lots of US sales and not much elsewhere?

My ultimate question: What will the hardware specifications be? RAM, CPU, GPU, etc

Are they still intent on blocking sideloading apps this year? Will they try that same s**t here?

This would have to undercut the Neo by a decent chunk to gain any sort of traction in the market.

The Neo is a revolutionary product in terms of the performance, build quality and price and Apple hit it out of the park with balancing all three to make it a super interesting product for those who can deal with the limitations (8GB RAM being the main one).

Still, competition is good and I can't wait to see what hardware it will be packing. I am sure many of them will have some flavour of Linux loaded onto them in no time at all.

Even Youtube Premium now has ads. Everything Google is just ads.
Not exactly user-friendly, but in about half an hour of farting around, you can set up your own Google developer console API for the YouTube API to use in apps like Kodi, which is completely ad-free and unrestricted.

you have a fundemental misunderstanding about this new device - it isn't anything close to a NEO because Apple characterize the NEO as their foray into entry level while Google says that this is intended to be high end ..... and to quote the article if you bothered to read it

Since their introduction 15 years ago, Chromebooks have found success in education and with consumers whose basic computing needs can be satisfied on a web browser.

But the new systems will offer significantly better performance and quality hardware than Chromebooks.

so while the chromebooks are the natural competitor to the NEO - this is most certainly not

I did read the article, I know Chromebooks were traditionally value-oriented (although local pricing did not necessarily reflect this).

Despite the Neo being Apple's entry-level device, in bursty workloads it performs as well as a lot of higher end Intel and AMD laptops. The Neo scores around 3500 in single core and 9000 in multi-core on Geekbench 6 which runs rings around the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus in single core and matches the Core Ultra 5 135H in multi-core results.

Google will need to pull a rabbit out of their hat if they intend to compete. Chromebooks as they currently stand cannot hold a candle to the Neo.

Beginning of the end for Microsoft?
More and More servers running on Linux or Unix, now more Desktops running Linux or Google?

So their throwing the upcoming Tensor G6 into a laptop chassis and trying to compete with the MB Neo......while still being behind on performance compared to the A18 pro chip in the Neo, but with 16gb ram..... interesting approach. Also GPU power seems to be lacking, but the all important AI accelerator is onboard obviously. Google loves them some data harvesting.

Something like 75% of their revenue comes from ads, it used to be higher as well. So yea they are basically an ad company and have always been
