Google Maps now has a speedometer

Google Maps has added an on-screen speedometer to its navigation interface, Android Police reports.

This forms part of Google's integration of Waze features into its primary Maps navigation app, including speed camera notifications and speed limit indicators.

I wonder if this would be good enough to use in court?

Your GPS isn't super accurate, so depends by how much. 1km over grace, nope, 20km and the speedometer says you were at the speed limit, yes.

Remember GPS generally does not take into account inclines, then phone is not 100% accurate as it will be within a few meters.

For history, I doubt that and should not have an impact as you don't know the road when they were driving there.

Would be nice motorist A kills B and then in court they can use the Google history to demonstrate A's driving behavior overall.

As I'm sure Google will keep a history?

No they can't.

It does not even come close to meeting the standards required for evidence.

Meh in both Oscar and Van Breda (I was at both) the 'standard' for evidence looks pretty low to me.

Why then do motor journalists use GPS devices for measuring lap times and acceleration times?

Nothing new.
Garmin/TomTom GPS from 10 years back showed map, speed, speed-cameras, eta, etc.
Cough cough .... at exorbitant prices to keep the maps up to date! This is essentially free. And you can keep an offline copy of your local area on your phone too, so absolutely minimal impact on 3g data usage.

You still stuck with 3G? Personally though I find the real time traffic updates useful enough to keep my data on

Ho ho - I used the term "3g" as a generic for network data that is NOT wi-fi. It really doesn't matter exactly how it actually connects, as long as it "works" and is "fast enough". For traffic data, even morse-code speeds would be fast enough.

I did get an alert the other day and was surprised , nice that they are bringing the Waze power into maps

More accurate then your actual speedometer - but yes less accurate on inclines and declines.

When this real-time speed tracker and the speed limit indicator is turned on, Maps will reportedly notify you when you are speeding.
How do I turn on the "speed limit" indicator? I did find where to turn on the speedometer only, but really only want the limit indicator.
