Why do you think this thing was discontinued and not replaced?

I'm thinking if Google made their own certified box with proper vanilla Android and regular updates, it'd be a hit over these 3rd party boxes

They have the ADT-2 dev kit.
 
I wonder if this means that they'll have a proper version soon (ie non developer) ?

Chromecast without in interface or remote, doesn't compare to a full Android TV IMO

It looks like it's basically a Chromecast with Android TV on it, it would be a major hit if they released a retail version.
