Google Notebooks to take on Microsoft

LOVE IT. Like the whole idea of "unmanaged" PC's and data kept in the cloud.
With more bandwidth coming into the country and prices eventually coming down this is definitely viable.

wouldnt trust a cloud to be reliable specially with our countries network and the way things are now, a cloud to me does not seem practical yet

Yeah, pity with countries like ours with crappy speeds and capped accounts, having a notebook like this is pretty useless.

Not for SA for a long while yet.

edit: unless they come with unlimited 3g (similar to BB's)

cant wait to see this in action .... along with LTE this should awesome!

Yeah with our speeds and cap, cloud is still a little dodgey. But things (broadband speeds etc.) are improving at least, lets just hold thumbs that they keep improving.

Would like to see how much data this would use on a typical day's use.

I think one of these Notebooks would be a suitable successor to the Ipad give-a-way!

I don't actually get how this is going to save companies money versus notebooks with MS Enterprise tools... It's a $20 monthly rental plus unlimited bandwidth for a set of tools that aren't nearly as fully developed as Microsoft's. I couldn't replace my work Office toolset with Google's online document/spreadsheet programs - they just aren't up to the job and I have a whole other set of things I need to use that aren't Microsoft and aren't Google either... So can someone explain this to me?

Microsoft will also not go down with out a fight, I sure they are also looking at a more cloud centered systems to complement their well developed non cloud based systems.

They already are pushing cloud very hard. With developments like Azure. Office also already plugs into the cloud.

But being the big nerd that I am, a computer that looks after itself takes all the fun out of it....my windows is due for a format any day now ;)

wonder if these Chromebooks will come to SA

I don't see the issue for some cases. For work and business it is impractical, but as a communications tool it is a larger tablet with a better keyboard for a good price. At home in the evenings I start up my laptop and then my browser and often don't do anything outside of my browser for hours. Of course when you start watching movies or listening to music you will leave your browser, but I'd love a laptop like this at that price on which I can actually type an email properly. Data usage wise this would be no different.
