I don't quite get how this works?

The only setting it gives me are home/work location, shares, sports teams - but in the cards I see birthdays, movies, events, photospots, news etc. THey're all on - but I haven't see a card yet?

it shows up the appropriate cards based on your location and beahviour habits (yes google knows all about you ). so lets say you go to a new place and a place you are not normally at, it will show you what tourists spots are there for example as well as how to get back home. leave your gps on all the time to make it actually do something

i went to india and it showed me the exchange rate as well as tourists spots nearby every time i needed to know i just used google now . its actually quite cool!

I find the most useful part to be when I have a scheduled appointment, or if I google a business/address, it makes a card with directions and an ETA based on the route and current traffic conditions.. that's pretty cool.

I also like that it shows upcoming fixtures and live scores for my favourite football teams (that I've added on Google Plus)... though I think that's about as much as we get in SA for now :|

Just leave it for a while and it'll learn your moves. You'll be quite surprised at the amount of random things that pop up

Like, it'll load your packages being shipped into Google now and will tell you when they're being moved whenever there's an update.

The biggest problem, with Google now is that you have to use all Google services for it to work properly.

G+, Gmail and Gmaps and so on.

Why is that a problem?

I can't think of better email than GMail and Google Maps is in a league of its own.

What worries me is that I'm more & more thinking of getting myself a Google Chrome book.

I love Google.

Only issue I have with Google now is it eats battery unnecessarily if you don't need it.

For me... none, for people that do not use Google that much, its an issue as they will not get everything/anything out of Now they Google has on offer and yes I know people that Have Android Phones that use other services.

For example Microsoft have come a long way since the Hotmail days. outlook.com is a decent service and in some ways better the Gmail also some people use office Exchange for calander and mail instead of Google. Most people I know use Facebook instead of G+ as for maps, if you bought something like Sygic for offline navigation, Google Now will not learn your comings and goings.

So you can see where this leads to?

Have you used the new Gmail with tabs? Pure genius & it actually makes Outlook feel old & dated.

I'm seriously considering ditching the full blown outlook app on my pc.
