Since the launch of Google Photos, we’ve had a lot of questions around what this means for the future of Picasa. After much thought and consideration, we’ve decided to retire Picasa over the coming months in order to focus entirely on a single photo service in Google Photos

I found it a bit resource heavy and never felt very comfortable with the UI. Can't say I'll miss it. Then again I'm pretty happy to dump all my pics in the pics folder and let Onedrive suck 'em into the cloud.
 
I actually found it quite light, actually. And for quick crops or small edits, was great to use!

Plus, if I understand it, the Google Photos is for online/cloud only - there's no version for local browsing?

Seems to work pretty much like my pic folder OneDrive set up. Keep your photos locally and Photos automatically copies them to the cloud.
 
Picasa is an easy to use program which works well. It will a great pity if Google does retire it .
 
It was always a mess of an app that didn't really fit into the Google ethos.

I've been loving Photos since day one, even more so after adding the facial recognition feature.

It's replaced the Photos App on my iPHone as well and with the new "delete already uploaded files" it makes management very simple.
 
I found it annoying that my phone would always backup my photos to Picasa, until I changed my phone settings.
 
Do I have to copy my albums over or will they be automatically migrated to Google Photos?

Picasa Web Albums
If you have photos or videos in a Picasa Web Album today, the easiest way to still access, modify and share most of that content is to log in to Google Photos, and all your photos and videos will already be there. Using Google Photos, you can continue to upload and organize your memories, as well as enjoy other great benefits like better ways to search and share your images.

However, for those of you who don’t want to use Google Photos or who still want to be able to view specific content, such as tags, captions or comments, we will be creating a new place for you to access your Picasa Web Albums data. That way, you will still be able to view, download, or delete your Picasa Web Albums, you just won’t be able to create, organize or edit albums (you would now do this in Google Photos

They should be migrated if you are referring to the old Picasa Web.

Did you go to photos.google.com to look?
 
Yay! No more Chinese Picasa spammers bouncing their junk via Picasa's mail servers. One issue Google never bothered resolving.
