A friend of mine in recently in the US knowing I have always wanted a Pixel phone bought me a Pixel 6a ($168,40 inclusive of VAT at Walmart) but now the problem is locked to Verizon. I got the phone sealed and apparently the phone needs to connect to a verizon tower then it will be unlocked after 60 days. Considering I cant connect to Verizon now what are the best unlocking services I can use? Back in 2012 I unlocked a Vofafone locked HTC online but I guess things have changed a lot since then

According to that, you fly to America and wait 60 days it seems.

Same issue, but imported mine via Amazon.

Currently trying the paid unlock route, if it works I'll let you know.

Before that I was using a workaround that disables background data to an extent so it does not block the SA sim. Does mean that backups need to be done manually which is a pain.

That was working flawlessly until recently when overnight my phone gave me a sim error again, so not sure what caused it.

To set it up again I need to factory reset the phone, which I'm not keen to do, but will try again if all else fails.

Seems you could contact Verizon and ask for the unlock code.

Hi all

Thought I'd post an update on my experience.

From my online research it seems there was some sort of patch or update which no longer allows you to switch off background battery usage (which stops the phone from connecting to a network in the background and picking up that it's network locked) and thus the workaround stopped working for me.

I paid Unlockbase to unlock it and they eventually have refunded me as they could not do it in their normal time frame. My IMEI is however still in their que so to speak, so maybe it will eventually be unlocked. There are apparently some global delays and new methods being tested where they will include my IMEI.

In the mean time I tried Express Unlocks as they promise immediate unlocking, however be carefull as this is not accurate. After the initial payment all they do is run a check to see if you're device is eligible and then you need to cough up even more the actually unlock it. Thus I won't try this until I know for sure Unlockbase can't help me.

I also did speak to Total Wireless and they can unlock the phone for $150 😱 They did confirm that the phone and SIM have to be activated in the US and KEPT ACTIVE for 60 days in order for the free unlock to apply. Thus you can't just buy there, activate and come back to SA.

So ja I guess as last resort I can do that, which will end up costing me the same in total as buying they phone unlocked from Amazon right now, so no savings but atleast not more.

Another update on my saga.

Unlockbase couldn't help me and I was refunded.

Express unlock also couldn't. The phone is hard locked to Total Wireless.

I've tried Total, but I need to phone a department there which isn't practical.

So all in all I guess my gamble didn't pay off.
