Need some guidance on a sensitive issue. Was doing some clearing up of a young (12 year old) students laptop who uses it for learning/studying online. I was clearing up the browser cache and history when I noticed some unsavoury website visits. I have questioned the student indirectly about whether he/she is using the browser for anything other than studies and he/she denies it. The strange thing is that the searches look very random, example:

Friday 16th (16:31) - www.abc.com
(16:34) - www.efg.com
(16:36) - www.hij.com
Thurs 15th (16:41) - www.klm.com
(16:42) - www.nop.com
Wed 14th (16:28) - www.qrs.com
(16:30) - www.tuv.com
(16:32) - www.xyz.com

I know it's practically impossible for members here to give a straight forward answer as there are many possibilities and I would like to give the benefit of doubt to the student so my first question is: Could a a virus cause the above? (I have scanned the drive and no problems found). The student uses Zoom and Zoho for classes and the standard Chrome browser.

At that kids age, horniness is permanent.

They're not random, they're all alphabet runs though in sequence of 3? Some of them are obviously legit sites like airline, new network etc. but weird how they're visited in a 3-char sequence.

I think he was disguising the actual sites with 3 alphabet runs. Like xyz.

This dude has technique... the kids are getting clever.

Its normal for kids to want to check these things out. You just need to create boundaries.

Let's not beat around the bush about the "student". A quick look at your post history shows you had a son in Grade 5 last year so obviously he's the Grade 6 student/12 year old in question.

You were "clearing up the laptop" but your primary objective was snooping, since you went 5 days back in Chrome's history whereas a simple history/cache clearance in the settings would not even take you to today's history.

Your kid is smart and you are a nosey parent. If you taught him about the birds and the bees and brought him up well, you should have nothing to worry about.

It's not the actual url, I'm just using an example.. .

Nice try but no cigar. Learner is not related to me thankfully but it's a bit more complicated in that the visited sites were not just x-rated ones, hence why I'm trying to determine if there is a possibility of malware causing the random site visits, otherwise this child may need counselling. I also understand the above sarcastic comments/jibes but this is a serious matter.

Seems like the kid is trying to escape home by booking flights on KLM’s website.

My missus used to download movies and series from a variety of dodgy file sharing sites, fortunately on her Mac. Often the clickable links for a particular title would then open up multiple tabs in her browser.

So could be something similar, if they trying to download games / content etc..

Just a thought

I noticed bit-torrent is installed on the laptop and also something like free-games online that was searched. Thanks so much for this useful info, it's starting to make some sense now.
