Google Snaps Up YouTube for $1.65B

That cheap? :) Brilliant for the guys at YouTube. I do however expect lots of legal suits since Google snapped it up. Big money behind anything draws lawyers like bees to honey!

I doubt lawyers will be called in for litigation, M$ started their own "YouTube" service earlier this month and there a lots of other video on demand services, if YouTube had a monopoly in the market then maybe, but they dont.

Some companies might be deterred now that Google have ownership. Previously YouTube was only surviving on Venture Capital money so a court case would've likely closed them down.

However the capital that Google has, will most likely put off a large amount of copyright-holders.

Unless antowan is thinking about copyright lawyers?

Google is getting too big, and they're destroying many hundreds of thousands of little companies across the world in their quest to become even bigger.

They are the mark of the beast I tell you ;).

I have no problem with this as long as it remains easy for startups to come along in future. :)

As long as google is good at what they do and it remains free I don't see a problem with it as long (as ant says) startups are able to get going still.

I'm really hoping google doesn't make too many changes as YouTube works pretty well as it is.

Hopefully they're gonna change that flash video crap into something more useful to download like on Google Video. I doubt it will change much though - just get rebranded a bit and probably merge content with google video.

Can't see why google wanted youtube but hey, they probably know best.

I guess this development is not good news for Universal. I very much doubt they would go ahead with a lawsuit against a company like google.

How so?

Google grabbing youtube is probably NOT a good thing for users - read for instance this ongoing apparent attempt to censor the popularity of a 911-truth type movie - with references to some previous examples of Googles willingness to censor content, and remove sites that are critical of China - note also the link to the Google idea of opening microphones on users PC's to listen in on them, supposedly just to tailor adverts directed at them..

Paranoia. There is no proof for any of their claims that I could see on that page.

Do you have any further info on this? From what I could see it was an idea that someone at google had and has gone no further. I would be specifically interested in if/how google plans to record from these microphones without the users knowledge or consent.

one thing to note is that no money changed hands...just stock.

google bought youtube for around 1.25% of google's worth. it is only $1.6billion if you consider google to be worth 100% of it's stock. a heck of a lot of people dont think so. in context, I think youtube is worth more than 1.25% of google.
as far as I know, their stock rose because of this news, so it is entirely possible that they bought youtube and "made a profit" after "spending" $1.6bill

why did google buy youtube? well, youtube had come to an agreement with some copyright holders, so the floodgates opened for a viable business.
google is in the advertising business....loads of eyeballs on youtube everyday, serving up ads before each video would be lucrative.

and, maybe, perhaps they bought it because it wouldve been worse in the long run if someone else bought it.

all speculation of course.
