VPN's and private websites will just become more popular... They can only filter so much.. Think about it, Google has only indexed 1% of the internet.. Government? lol

Probably because some government/court told them to do so, they are not free to do as they please.

I've heard a few arguments, but I still fail to see how a more controlled internet will affect me negatively. In fact here's a thought- I buy my games through steam. I don't pirate yet I have put up with invasive DRM because others do.

And how would you feel if some government agency decides that you may not access Steam at all?
Or have to pay a further tax to access Steam?
Or that Valve has to pay that tax on your behalf and build that cost into your game purchases? (imagine how that would affect free games)

More control doesn't necessarily=dictatorship. It's the media distributors that decide region locks, not governments and I don't believe that's their intention with these talks.

I'll admit, this whole thing is treading a very fine line, but if they can find a way to lower piracy without going overboard and are able to curb some of the other less desirable things on the internet- scams etc, yet retain freedom of speech then I'm all for it.

I'll let them debate and put forward a proposal before making up my mind either way.
