Google is planning to push the envelope even further by adding new products to enhance search results.
Whilst Google is the dominant player in the US search market, with 63% of this market stitched up, they are not resting on their laurels.
Google’s Marissa Mayer said to the BBC: “The race in search is far from over and innovation and continued improvement is absolutely pivotal.”
This is good news for Internet users as search has become a crucial part of online activity.
Google has four new products in the pipeline namely Rich Snippets, Google Squared, Google Search Options and Skymap.
According to the BBC Rich Snippets are search results that return more information in every listing. Someone searching for a review about a restaurant will get additional information like the average score of the reviews, the number of reviews and the restaurant’s price range for example.
The second new feature, Google Squared, will draw up a spreadsheet in seconds of the search result providing a variety of comparisons. The live demonstration done using the term “small dog” showed a table with photographs of various dogs, their origin, weight and height.
The next new feature, Google Search Options, is ideal for users who are unsure of what to type in the search bar to refine their search. This addition to Google search will allow a user, once the initial search has produced results, to specify that they are only interested in viewing forum posts or blogs for example.
The last addition is a mobile application, called Skymap,that uses the Android operating system to display the constellations using a smart phone’s GPS capability.
This latest round of new features not only offers Internet users enhanced performance but it is also a good sign that Google is still strong and healthy. It is easy for a company with such a strong presence in the Internet market to become complacent but they still appear to be on top of things.
