Last week, Google started pushing out a new update for the Gmail app on Android. One of the changes was a new conversation view with card-based design and some other visual changes, along with improved sync and outbox behavior. But what you don’t see yet is that the app is now ready to support ads, which should be coming in the future.

As Android Police found out in their APK teardown of the latest version, there are multiple references to ads in the code of the app. It’s unclear what the ads will look like in the app; on the website, the ads appear above your mail or if you use the new inbox view with tabs they appear in the Promotions tab like an email.

The stock Android experience has mostly been ad-free so far, with the exception of the YouTube app. With Google being an ad company and now having a large install base in the form of Android, it was only a matter of time before the ads started appearing in other places. It remains to be seen how these ads are displayed and if they will be annoying enough for users to start looking elsewhere.

Wonder how this will go down with users.

Its been part of googles master plan forever. They realized mobile devices was the next evolution of the pc and they needed a way to generate ad revenue from mobile devices. They created android and said have it for free :)......

Yeah, that will really suck if I start seeing ads on my screen. They shouldn't underestimate irritated users. Some might switch if the whole thing becomes an ad delivery device/os.

Oh noes, we'll have to update our adblockers again.

If they start implementing that I will be fg annoyed(Correct me if I am wrong here every time you boot a new android phone out of the box you are required to register for a gmail/existing account to have access to play store and credentials have to be input in order to process further)

Goes to show nothing is for free at the end of the day - too much bloatware on android is and nobody bothers to check all apps that make it on Google play.

It sucks, but adverts are pretty much synonymous with Google.

I really don't like the idea of BUYING an Android device and then getting ads on it though; but I suppose the mail service is for free.

Hi everyone,

I agree with many opinions here. Every time and again I realize that Google is manipulating the layout of the screens in a way that the user finish doing what Google want. Of course that means see their ads or in this case visit Play.

Really Annoying!

You don't have to use the Gmail app, there is other mail clients that will work without ads......right?

You would think this is obvious. Also Gmail is also a free service because of ads. Without ads there would be no Gmail to talk of. If you cannot stand ads, there are several options for you, use a different client, or use another email service, or ad block, or just dont get an android phone.

Way to defend the corporate scumbags there. It's not like they have an army of PR people to do that for themselves.

Gmail did perfectly fine without ads for all these years so your argument is invalid.

GMail has always had ads.

Google is an advertising company, always has been and aways will be.
