Google has announced plans to establish a point of presence in SA within the next month. This means that Internet users who access Google’s services will do so on local servers, using local bandwidth. This is expected to have a significant impact on the speed of the company’s services, which, until now, have had to be accessed on servers in the US.

This is very great news I remember mailing google countless times to host locally in SOuth Africa.

There must be a huge demand for google to host locally and with Clients signing up with ISP with local bandwidth this will come useful for them, Google wants to now been in the South African Shores, they soon going to be worth more than Microsuckers.

Awesome stuff. Although with 4GB storage per mailbox, I'm not sure if they'll allow gmail to be mirrored locally :(

Cool:cool:

There bandwidth bill will be sky-high
I don't think so. The content itself will be served using local bandwidth, and I'm sure they can get their servers linked to US servers with some kind of VPN that does not involve Telkom cap B/S or ridiculous rates. Maybe buy a part of SAT3?

if it works for gmail, then kick-ass to google
I doubt that they will build a server farm costing millions here and then only host the search. Fingers crossed + Hoping they provide facilities to move a gmail account.

housed at Megawatt Park, Eskom’s sprawling campus north of Johannesburg.
So they heard about the loadshedding and figured eskom is not going to loadshed itself.;)

OT: Found this while looking for more info.
