Google to host email but not site

Hi everyone

So I have Google managing my domain and currently hosting my email and website. I want to have a local ISP host my website but would like Google to still manage the domain.

I have read up, but don't know what has to be changed!

Can anyone help?

Not true.

All you need to do is change the DNS entries away from google, keep the MX records pointed there, and point the DNS to your new host. Whoever is hosting for you should be able to help.

Yep, as bullzeye said, just need to get Google to point the domain's A record to your new host's IP address, while keeping the MX records pointed at Google. Feel free to PM me if you need assistance.

I have attached an image of the DNS records I have to change, just to make sure I will change the CNAME and A Address entries? Just odd that there are entries for calendar and docs?

crap advice (sorry dude). Your DNS server doesn't necessarily have to be the host you're hosting with. Currently my DNS server is Rackspace and my host is Hostgator (for some of my sites) while my other more corporate stuff is on Rackspace Cloud.

Leave your "Email Settings" alone.
Don't change "calendar","docs" or "mail" (these points to Google Apps). You can also ignore "sites" and "start".

Change www from CNAME to A the IP address of your new host, also change (but keep record of!) all the @'s IP addresses to the same IP.

(the reason why there's multiple @'s is a sort of round-robin for multiple servers serving your website)

You should be set.

Remember to write down all the settings first, so you can recreate it and revert to Google in case you **** it up

Your website you can host wherever you want depending on how important it is to your company. If its a commercial site with lots of traffic and transactions then host with someone like Bahnhof if you are technically competent or Rackspace if you are technically challenged. If its a little brochure website telling your clients about your business then cheap and nasty hosting can be used like Virpus or Hostgator.

I would put the DNS into cloudflare as its the best DNS service I have ever come across.

Yea but that requires him to update the DNS from Google's management to Cloudflare's, and I think he would like to avoid that if I'm not mistaken, otherwise I'd have gone with pretty much the same advice since it imports your DNS settings for you etc

I have updated the DNS management(changed CNAME to A address and all the @'s to the ip address of my new host).

Just waiting for it to take effect(read that it takes a few hours(hope thats right).

So now I have a new problem, when I go to my sites URL it redirects me to my hosting companies site(Afrihost).

I guess I have told my domain management that mysiteurl.com should be redirected to afrihost.co.za. Anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Sigma721,

It's possible that your there was a misunderstanding about where to point your website.
You need to setup a A record for www.yourdomain.com to point to the IP address of the server at Afrihost that is hosting your website. This information should be provided in your hosting package welcome email. Its also a good idea to setup a record for http://yourdomain.com to point to the same IP.

screenshot dude, I'll give you a shout what you should change if you don't come right. otherwise pm me your details (IP address of your new host/login details for your gewgle stuff and I'll see if I have time to change it for you)

he had his DNS setting in his CNAME record for "www" and the A record for his domain was with the correct IP. I just fixed that for him and it appears he is online now with the new hosting while still at Google
