I wish someone would build a middleware that just lets anything talk to anything. Make it about the clients not the protocols.

Google bundled phone calls, SMS, MMS, IM and video into one application, it was also initially dependent on Google Plus which was later separated. It has no association with an SIM, but with email. On a mobile device it is cumbersome, and by the time that Google Plus was moved to its own designated app the larger user base moved to the competition where SIM association was more acceptable to the market.

I get that. But then simply add SIM based authentication to Hangouts.

Add new features to Hangouts or take some away but have one universal protocol.

I don't mind different clients on different platforms, but let them all talk to each other.

I used to love iMessage over Whatsapp because I could message from my Mac instead of my phone to the same people.

Then my Mac was taken away and it was all broken.

Then I went to Hangouts which worked on everything but Windows phone.

Then Whatsapp Web happened and it was a decent middle ground.

Now Google goes backwards and wants to segregate it again and I can honestly say if it's phone only, I'm not bothering.
 
WhatsApp has been testing video calling for ages now. Google's announcement should push Whatsapp to hurry up the release.
