Google Voice available in SA - make phone calls from Gmail

Google has announced that its Voice Calls from Gmail feature is rolling out to many new countries, including South Africa

Wonder if Google Voice will now aslo work on Android phones....

They've had this for ages. All the google blog post was saying was that they now support 38 different languages (and that call rates are slightly lower).

The Google Voice features are actually split - this is simply the Google Voice through Gmail and has nothing to do with integration with your phone or a google phone number.

This seems to be a problem on the android client as we do not have google voice numbers yet. There are some work arounds however. http://www.labnol.org/internet/get-google-voice-phone-number/18425/

Agreed.
Used the Skype equivalent overseas in 2005 already, so there's nothing ground-breaking about this news, as the article seems to be making out.

can it do group chat/conference calls--that is where Skype beats Google Talk/Voice hands down. But I like the idea of a single communication platform by Google.

One of our freelancers reported the same problem. Google normally rolls these services out over time, but do keep us updated. It'll be interesting to hear how quickly people gain access to the service, or even to figure out why some people don't get access to it (country settings, maybe?)

ok thanks man. I been seeing this google voice for awhile now and wanted to get some application to turn my ipod touch into a phone thingy over wifi and wanted to try this method.

Yep, I get this too. That's because Google Voice proper doesn't seem to be available in South Africa (yet?). Only voice calling from the Gmail web client is enabled.

do google talk apply for licences and pay for interconnection like other providers in sa?maybe that's what is causing the delay
