I'm not sure if I am in the right section on this, however it is an announcement of sorts. Ever heard of Google Voice ? Yep, the application which allows you free calls and sms and all the rest. However it is not available in South Africa as yet - or is it ?
In theory no. You cannot sign up for Google Voice in South Africa - but you can sign up for it in the US. So here is what I am thinking and I have tried the product out in South Africa as I was in South Africa a few weeks ago and I could log into Google Voice to send free sms messages back to the US.
The service does work in South Africa. But as a South African it is impossible to sign up. Well not totally impossible. I just signed my mom up for it. She lives in South Africa and has a US based phone number - and yes she has Google Voice so she can send me free sms's at least. Actually she has two US based phone numbers but that's not really the point.
The point is that you can use the service in South Africa, but you have to have someone in the US set it all up on your behalf. Get all your friends to also sign up, download one of the multiple applications for Google voice which are available out there for your blackberry or iphone and a host of other mobile phones and you can keep in touch with your friends for pretty much free, or very little. And just in case you don't have a larney phone to keep in touch with all your friends for free, Google will save all those sms messages so you never loose them.
The service also works over a WiFi connection as well so it is possible to communicate as well using local wireless networks using your cellphone.
