GoPro HD Hero 1 stuffing up memory cards

Hello, I've been expecting you.

I'm hoping someone has come across this issue, I have a GoPro HD Hero 1, the version with the SD card, I purchased a Battery BacPac 2 weeks ago, and since using it the camera has buggered up 2 32GB cards! Data can be read, but not written, even though Windows appears to delete the files or add them. When unplugging the card and then plugging it back in the original files are still there, formatting doesn't work on PC or MAC.

Is there any way to rescue these cards? I really don't want to have to spend another few $$ on a new camera and cards.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated :D

Is the overwrite switch on the SD enabled?
 
Have the same problem, also caused by Go Pro. Have given up on the card already :(

You can try the Sandisk SD card formatter from https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ and see if that corrects the problem. They have an article about how some cameras cause problems with the high capacity cards because the camera firmware can only use 16GB or 32GB on the larger cards and that buggers the formatting around.

I've tried this with no success - the latest firmware is loaded and supports up to 32GB, which is what I was using

I've tried formatting the card in both the locked and unlocked positions

This happens to memory cards every time I hit around the 14GB mark, and it's happened every time I've used the camera so far, have you given up on the camera yet? This is my worst fear because they're bloody expensive!
 
I know the camera is the expensive part, but the memory cards should still be under warranty. Most brands carry at least a five year warranty.
 
Okay so according to GoPro support the Battery BacPac is responsible for this problem, once the replacement is sent I'll test and report back

I tried this (I think) by typing

sudo umount /dev/sdd1
sudo fsck.vfat -f -p /dev/sdd1

Unfortunately no success, I'm not at all literate in Linux so I'm not too sure if I've done this correctly

Would you be so kind as to share what I was really supposed to type? I saw some other commands using dd in the beginning but they didn't seem to work

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd bs=4k

You could also try bs=1M to possibly increase the speed. I'm assuming /dev/sdd is the correct device, if not change it to the correct one, can be verified with sudo fdisk -l. Note that sdd1 is the first partition and not the actual device so you want to specify sdd and not sdd1.

Thanks for the reply, I tried this and unfortunately it didn't work, I got this as a response after quite some time

If it's a 32GB card then that is correct and the job is done. It does not concern itself with the size of the device and once it gets to the end it will spit out that 'error' which is normal.

From that same livecd open gparted, select the device/card, top right corner I think.
From the menu select 'Device', 'Create Partition Table', choose 'msdos' and apply.
Next create a single ntfs (or whatever you prefer fat32, fat etc) partition by right clicking on the blank space where it says /dev/sdd or whatever. Might have to click the apply button/icon at the top below the menu, can't remember now.

Now see if it works.

I gave this a try and unfortunately it didn't work :cry:

Basically you can "delete" the files from the memory card, and it will show they've been deleted, but they'll still exist. Same thing with writing anything, it seems to copy fine, but take the card out and it'll all disappear. Formatting fails on everything but the GoPro and Ubuntu, and again although it says successful you just gotta pull the card out and put it back in and its as if nothing happened.

I'm assuming you have nothing to lose at this stage so would you consider popping one of those 'borked' cards into the mail to me and I'll have a stab at it & return it to you within a week or so?
 
What about the Classes? Normally they have to be a certain class to work properly or they bomb out.

They're Sandisk extreme cards, and worked up until I tried to use the bacpac
 
Sell the Hero1 on gumtree and upgrade to an SJ4000 with WiFi for around R1800. It's also 1080P 30FPS and 720P 60FPS. The LCD, built in wifi and huge accessory kit make it well worth it.
