Gordon Murray's McLaren F1 successor set for 2020 debut

Named T50, the radical £2.3m three-seat ‘fan car’ with a 12,400rpm V12 will be launched next May

Gordon Murray plans to unveil a production-spec version of his revolutionary T50 ground-effect ‘fan car’ in May.

The £2.3 million ‘analogue’ hypercar, to be built at Murray’s new Dunsfold factory, will move immediately after launch into a prototype build and development phase, before production build-up begins during 2021.

The first of the planned 125 cars – 100 road cars and 25 purely for the track – will reach its new owner at the beginning of 2022 and production will continue for a year.

Under a deal just announced, the T50’s all-important aerodynamics package is being developed with the assistance of the Silverstone-based Racing Point Formula 1 team, formerly Force India. Access to the team’s moving-floor wind tunnel, plus the expertise of its F1-trained technicians, will allow Murray to use large-scale models to refine the T50’s revolutionary active aero package.

A three-seater with a central driving position, the car combines the unique qualities of Murray’s two most iconic creations in a stellar 50-year, 50-car career: the seminal, ultra-light McLaren F1 three-seat supercar of 1992 and the Brabham BT46B grand prix ‘fan car’ of 1978, whose extraordinary levels of downforce briefly stood F1 on its head and took one race win before the team withdrew it in the face of opposition from rivals.

Yep, the fan car successor to the McLaren F1 is happening – full aero secrets revealed

This is big. Like, era-defining big. This is the Gordon Murray Automotive T.50, and it may just be the most aerodynamically-advanced - not to mention exciting - road car the world has ever seen.

Of course, we knew a bit about the T.50 already. We’d seen the sketches, mocked up our own renders and spoken to the big man about the most intricate details, but now we have the first official rendering of the rear three-quarter.

It looks absolutely incredible, right? It is, of course, completely dominated by that 400mm fan, which protrudes from the centre like some form of sci-fi thruster. Imagine following one of these down a British B-road. Not that you’d be able to tail it for very long - the fan, which Murray briefly introduced into Formula 1 with the Brabham BT46B in 1978, utilises ground effect aerodynamics by rapidly accelerating the air passing under the car and forcing it through active elements on the rear diffuser.

Whereas the aero may be advanced, though, the drivetrain is pleasingly old-school. As you’ll already be aware, the engine is a bespoke 3.9-litre naturally-aspirated V12 from Cosworth. It’ll produce 650bhp and 332lb ft of torque in its ‘standard’ trim, but Murray says that’ll rise to around 700bhp in Vmax Mode. It’ll also rev to 12,100rpm, at which point your ears will be able to retire.

The good news keeps coming too, because the T.50 will be rear-wheel drive only and feature a six-speed manual gearbox. Be still beating hearts and all that.

SA-born Murray, of course, was the man behind the iconic McLaren F1 road car. And now his company has partnered with the Racing Point Formula One Team to “further develop and test” the aerodynamics of the rear-driven, three-seat T.50.

Gordon Murray Automotive is hard at work developing their T.50 hypercar and we now have our first official image from the new company.

It has been coined as a so-called “McLaren F1 successor” and that is not to be laughed at as the man behind the original iconic F1 is the man behind the development of this new ‘analogue’ creation (he is South African by the way).

It will be built in Britain and limited to 100 road car units, with a further 25 honed for track use.

This first rear-quarter image of the T.50 (seen above) reveals some of the groundbreaking aerodynamics that the car will employ. This includes a large 400mm ground-effect fan, inspired by the Brabham BT46B Formula One car designed by Murray in the late seventies. The fan accelerates the airflow as it passes through the rear diffuser. It uses a vertically oriented intake duct to prevent the fan from picking up road debris. Vents also direct the air downward to cool the powertrain oil.

South African born, UK-based car design legend Gordon Murray has released the first image of his upcoming T.50 supercar, which he says will have the “most advanced and most effective” aerodynamics ever seen on a road car.

And although only the rear end of the vehicle is being revealed for now, this view does show us its most important, and radical, aerodynamic feature, which comes in the form of a 400m ground-effect fan, which - together with the active under body aerodynamics and dynamic rear aerofoils - enable the car to achieve “considerably more” aerodynamic performance and control than a conventional ground-effect supercar.

There’s more than just a smidgen of Formula One expertise going into this supercar, however, with Gordon Murray Automotive having teamed up with the Racing Point F1 team to further develop and test the aerodynamic systems of this vehicle. This includes the use of the team’s advanced rolling-road wind tunnel in Silverstone.

Owners will be able to choose from six different aerodynamic modes, which optimise the balance between traction and performance for different driving situations.

The T.50 weighs less than your average compact hatchback, with a kerb weight of just 980kW - Murray is, after all, a master of lightweight car design. Like the McLaren F1 supercar that Murray also designed back in the early ‘90s, the T.50 has a three-seat layout.

But it’s the engine that will really get you revved up - it’s bespoke Cosworth V12 force-fed motor sings all the way to 12 100rpm, making it the highest-revving road car engine ever made. The power unit is paired with a 48-volt integrated starter-generation and sends around 520kW to the rear wheels.

Cosworth-designed three-cylinder motor has the highest power density of any road-going, naturally aspirated V12

Gordon Murray Automotive, which is set to unveil its new T50 hypercar in May, has released a video that shows the hypercar's three-cylinder motor revving to 12,100rpm.

Developed by British engineering firm Cosworth, the normally aspirated 3.9-litre V12 produces around 650bhp and 332lb ft. Its 12,400rpm 'hard limit' makes it the highest revving road car engine ever built. For reference, the Aston Martin Valkyrie's V12 motor, also developed by Cosworth, tops out at 10,500rpm.

Murray T50 hypercar reaches V12 production milestone

3.9-litre powertrain for spiritual McLaren F1 successor begins testing in production-ready form for the first time

The all-new, ultra-lightweight 3.9-litre V12 engine that will power Gordon Murray’s new T50 supercar reaches a crucial milestone this week: running for the first time in production form on the dynamometers of its Northampton developer, Cosworth Engineering.

The engine, billed by its creators as “the greatest road car V12 ever made”, is claimed to be the lightest-ever V12 (180kg), with both the highest rev limit (12,100rpm) and the highest power density (166bhp per litre).

Tests have been proceeding for the past nine months on three-cylinder 12-valve prototypes as proving beds for the new engine’s aluminium pistons, titanium valves and conrods, gear-driven cam drive and crank-driven, 48V starter-generator. The last of these removes any need for a conventional belt-driven alternator. Work is now starting in earnest on refining the V12 as a complete unit.

Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) testing has already indicated that the engine meets emissions targets and exceeds its estimated power and torque outputs. This has led Murray to lift the official peak power output from the originally quoted 641bhp at 11,500rpm to 663bhp.

The McLaren F1’s spiritual successor will be revealed today via a livestream on the Gordan Murray Automotive YouTube channel.

The engine, billed by its creators as “the greatest road car V12 ever made”, is claimed to be the lightest-ever V12 (180 kg), with both the highest rev limit (12,100 rpm) and the highest power density with 166 hp (124 kW) per litre.

“Purest, lightest supercar ever built” has a 650bhp atmospheric V12 and a three-seat carbonfibre cabin

Gordon Murray’s new V12-engined T50 supercar, the “logical successor” to his seminal McLaren F1 of 1992, has been unveiled at the Surrey factory where manufacturing will start late next year. Deliveries are due to begin early in 2022.

The new car, which Murray calls “the purest, lightest, most driver-focused supercar ever built”, is an ultra-light, mid-engined, all-carbonfibre three-seater, dubbed the T50 because it’s Murray’s 50th car design in a career spanning more than half a century.

It uses a refined version of the ground-effect ‘fan car’ technology its designer first introduced to grand prix racing with the Brabham BT46B for the 1978 Formula 1 season. Powered by a new 650bhp naturally aspirated 4.0-litre Cosworth V12 with a 12,100rpm redline, the T50 will be built entirely by Gordon Murray Automotive, the bespoke company Murray launched to stand beside his existing design business when he revealed his plans for this car back in 2017.

Just 100 road-going T50s will be built, each at a cost of £2.36 million before local taxes – so about £2.8m in the UK. Most have already been snapped up by global car connoisseurs, notably in the US and Japan, each of whom has paid a £600,000 deposit for the privilege. A further £750,000 is due when their car is specified in detail, with the balance settled upon delivery.

The first T50 is scheduled to reach its owner in January 2022, and the entire batch will be completed within the same year. After road car production ends, there will be a run of 25 hardcore, track-only editions. Murray says he would love to see the car race but is reluctant to commit to a programme at present, because he wants to concentrate on the road-going version and because sports car and GT race regulations beyond 2022 are still far from certain.

SA-born Murray's new T50 is a 488 kW (R54m!) McLaren F1 successor

Gordon Murray Automotive has unveiled its new T50 supercar, billed as a spiritual successor to the McLaren F1 and powered by a 488 kW V12 engine.

Weighing a mere 986 kg, the supercar is scheduled to go into full production in the United Kingdom in January 2022, priced from £2,36-million (around R54-million) before taxes and offering what the firm describes as “an unsurpassed driving experience”. Just 100 units are planned.

The 3,9-litre V12 Cosworth makes 488 kW at a heady 11 500 r/min, with peak twisting force of 467 N.m on tap at 9 000 r/min. With a 12 100 r/min redline, Gordon Murray Automotive says it’s the “highest-revving naturally aspirated road car engine ever” and tips the scales at just 178 kg. It's mated to a six-speed Xtrac manual gearbox.

In addition, the Surrey-based firm claims the T50 features the “most advanced and effective aerodynamics ever seen on a road car”, aided by a 400 mm rear-mounted, ground-effect fan. The latter is driven by a lightweight 48 V motor and “rapidly accelerates air passing under the car”, forcing it through “active boundary-layer control ducts that form part of the rear diffuser”.

The company says via the application of two automatic and four driver-selected aero modes, the T50 is capable of increasing downforce by 50 percent, reducing drag by 12,5 percent, adding around 37 kW to the V12’s output (in combination with ram-air induction) and cutting braking distance by 10 metres from 240 km/h.
