So i am getting a credit on my Sinotec LCD i purchased last week (full HD 42"), was not happy with the DSTV quality, there seems to be alot of shadowing on the unit (not sure if that is the correct term but thats what it looks to me) + the LCD restarts itself after pro-longed use.

So, which LCD would you guys recomend on a 9K budget?

my in-laws had the same issues with a 32" Sinotec. A lot of shadows/patches on the picture and the unit wouldn't switch on after a couple of weeks. They got a credit and went for a Sony Bravia.

If you weren't happy with the 42" Sinotec then go for a lekka 32" Sammy ?

who did u buy from?
can u get a refund?

check if game has anythin on wed/thurs
they had a samsung 40" series 5 for 10k
and the week before a 42" lg full hd (thats wat i got!!)
i have a feeling they gonna have another one this week

Yeah, getting a refund from Makro. How's the LG pic quality with DSTV? what spec is the LG?

37" Bravia

That was my first option before i bought the Sinotec :D but i was drawn the 5 year gaurentee of the Sinotec but this time, i am not comprimising gaurentee for quality.

i dont have dstv
use it for gaming and watch stuff from my hdd thru xbox
normal tv looks crappy, but im quite impressed with the xbox and the series and stuff
afaik sd content will look always look crappy on hd sets, because of the upscaling i think

so i now i really want to get a bluray player to get the full benefit

Strange. We have heard so many good things about Sinotech.

Dont get me wrong bud, for the price you pay, it is bang for buck no doubt but when i spend 9K on a TV, i expect a little more. When i bought the LCD, they where playing something via DVD which looked good but not great, something i could have lived with. Seeing as though i am using mine mainly for DSTV, i need something a bit better on the eyes. Honestly, if there is a Sinotec out there with better SD pic quality than what i am getting now, i will not hesitate to buy it.

Did you not maybe miss a few tweaking tips? I know there were users before who said similar things, but after changing certain settings, they seemed to be very happy with it.

maybe try a plasma then
i hear its much better for tv and movies
try and compare lcd and plasma instore using the same inputs if you can

That was initially the problem when i setup, settings where off. Now i have them to "optimal" for my viewing but it still doesn't cut it.
Thing is, everyone says go for Plasma instead of LCD for normal TV viewing as ALL LCD's give bad pic quality over a TV signal, i agree but some of the LCD's give of a better SD pic quality than others.

not all 24 pages  but i did read the "long" review made by one of the posters there. I'm gonna get the guys to link up a few of the sets to the DSTV signal and then gauge pic quality from there.
Seems like alot of the guys are happy with their Sinotec and SD pic quality, maybe something is wrong with mine

I know it's a pain, but I'd advise you to go through the entire thread. There were many reviews which included lovely tips that helped many get the best out of their Sinotech. Does DSTV have any HDMI inputs? Why don't you use that rather? Or are you? Apparently that really boosts the quality.

My head hurts before i even start reading through a 24 page thread...LOl Any chance you can sum it up for me?
I have the old SD DSTV decoder so no HDMI, using RCA (yellow) cable from Decoder to LCD.

I've currently shopping around myself with pretty much the exact budget that you have. Done my share of research on TV's. Here's my 10c worth.

Contrast Ratio is a big plus. You should be gunning for as high a number as possible here.
Sinotec is cheap for 2 reasons (IMO). 1) it is manafactured here thus cheaper. 2) You get close to what you pay for. Yes it is a good bang for buck tv (was considering one myself) but its cheaper for reasons other than being locally produced.....

If you look at Game and places like Kay Makan, Govan Mani etc, there are some Great prices on 32" (if you're willing to drop in size) Full HD LCD TV's.

Other things to bare in mind is in SA, even with a HD PVR, you wont be using your 1080p. Sadly its currently limited to 720p which any HD READY tv supports. The only place you'll actually see the benefit is when playing games (assuming you're connecting a PC) or playing Bluray movies as mentioned. There are also rumblings that 1080p is Not the way to go for SD. Still have to read up on that, but apparently it makes the viewing quality on SD bad.

Now if you're still reading this, congratulations :)
Seriously though, here's my input on tv models.....

Samsung LA32A550 - Very nice tv. Full HD, 30 000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, supports pip.
Samsung LA32B530 - The 2009 replacement of the model above (5 Series). 40 000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, SADLY loses the pip support.

LG LG50 32" - Another Full HD offering. 50 000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, pip.

Those are the models for under R10K.
If you can for out a little extra, I think its the Sony W or Z series that offers you the motionflow (100mhz) which makes TRULY noticable difference.

Thats pretty much where my focus has been.... Not sure if it helps you any, but hope there was something worth taking away.

Cheers
