Hey guys.

I've got Vista Ultimate installed on my pc, it works okay, not much problems.

The one anoying problem I have is that my shutdown takes forever, really. Restarts are the same.

It shows the screen, "shutting down", then after about 20 seconds my screen goes black, but there is still activity on the harddrive. The harddrive led blinks and I hear it working for about 30 seconds to a full minute, then it restarts.

If I am in Safe-mode and restart, it goes instantly. So this has to be some kind of software or something that's blocking it.

Did any of you experience anything similar to this? Got any ideas. I doubt it's a hardware issue, so I won't post the specs.

Btw. looking at the startup entries, I've only got the most basic software starting up, nothing resource intensive. This happens from the beginning with a clean installation as well, so it must be a Windows service or driver ;)

Ciao,
tera ;) :D :p

Usually when there's shutdown delays is when Windows is struggling to stop certain services. So you can try stopping the services one by one manually to check which one's the culprit

lol, that sounds like a method, but do you realize how many services Vista has? It will take forever dude, the pc takes ages to reboot :p

I have the same problem, but I hardly shutdown or restart... so it doesnt bother me much.

Really?, that's cool. It would be great if we find a solution however ;)

Last night when i turned my laptop on it just says some restore thing or something? I say continue and it just stays vlack :( Any Ideas :P

Yeah, I'm finding the same thing here. I think that like xrapidx, I'll just avoid shutting down unless absolutely neccessary. Waking from hibernate is nice and quick, at least.

Still busy setting up the new 'puter though - and at this rate it may take longer than planned.:o

I found it slow, with anything and everything. Even though I struggled getting drivers for XP, it was worth going back to old kinda but not really faithfull. Still prefer win2k though :P

These links should help you, otherwise you can download an application to shut everything down for you.

Those workarounds do zilch, but thanks for trying, I've read it all through googling :p

Try this:

click Start > type in search box regedit.
In the Registry Editor dialog box, navigate to
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+SYSTEM
+CurrentControlSet
+Control

set WaitToKillServiceTimeout=10000 (which sets it to 10 seconds)

NOTE Try this at your own disgretion, I'm not responsible for anything that may or may not happen to your PC if you try this (except the good stuff:D)

Sorry for this feo, that BS doesn't work! ;) :D :p

Teraside so you've tried what feo suggested and it made NO difference? Guess there's another problem then.

About stopping the services manually.. yes there is a lot of services but you obviously have an idea on which ones you want to stop.

XCalibre, thanks for the help, but to be honest, I really don't know which ones to stop, like I said, it did this from the first day I ran it with a fresh install, so it's like finding a needle in a hay stack ;) :D :p

I timed my shutdowns yesterday:
  • 70 secs on Vista (all apps and user-initiated services shutdown before shut-off), and
  • 70 secs on XP.

FYI, use it / don't use it.
