and I'm not sure what to do with it. Does it have the muscle to run aperture? Obviously expansion is a no go unless I use flush mounting usb thumb drives.

A measly 64 which leaves me with 50gb after a clean install.

Lol. Always wondered how much actual space would be left. Still - I wouldn't say no to any MBA, as a gift! :)

My situation's obviously different to yours - but could think of some real world uses... Having said that - none of them would involve processor-heavy tasks!

I'm on a MacBook Pro with 256gb and I barely have 50gb free when trying.

That's without ISO's and Movies and what not.

It should run Aperture no problems, it's just a library management application after all not like you can do heavy editing with it.

MacSales.com have SSD's for your MacBook Air. They are not very cheap but are the only viable option. If you don't want to upgrade, i'm willing to make the sacrifice and relieve you of that burden...

Where's the bloody queue for getting oneself friends/relatives/associates/acquaintances who hand over MBA's!!!

What then? Photo's? bootcamp?

I doubt I'll have problems with jpgs but raw files take their toll on the CPU even before I start retouching.

No Bootcamp but I have one Windows 8 and one Linux VM in Virtualbox.

Rest is just Apps, iPhoto Library and iTunes library that excludes all Apps for iOS.

And work related documents etc.

Point being that even an optimized for storage yet "normal" system needs 256gb at least. I have no idea how people survive on 128gb or less.

Aaah yes RAW might be a different matter. Even so it should do the job well enough for what it is.

It will run but it will be slow. My old Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz took roughly six seconds to render/export-to-jpeg a 18mp CR2 file. I'm guessing this would be about half the speed.[1] Fine for importing images and do culling on the go, at least for my uses, but I wouldn't rely on it if I had to develop the images in any way in a hurry.

[1] That 320M graphics card may change matters - it's much newer than the one I had. Faster ram might make an appreciable difference too.

Clearly not an Aperture user then.

I should add that I have image previews set to full size, which obviously makes things slower.

I'd be curious to know how it does, bwana. If you set preview size to unlimited, and import, say, 100 random CR2 files from the 7D, see how long it takes until it has generated previews of all 100. How many seconds per image on average?

I often see this model going for fairly cheap 2nd hand, and it's tempting as a travel machine.

I'll see what I can do about the testing. I don't use the 7D often so you might have to wait for a while.

I figure if it's too slow I'll give it to one of my kids. Have to make up for giving my eldest that nexus somehow.

I think my kid will be getting it after all. Importing photos was mind boggling slow - curse you USB ports!
