Hi guys

I have galaxy note.
I have been using wifi when I'm home an office and loaded a 75mb loyalty voucher for occasional email header previews

I had onavo data monitor installed to keep an eye

Everything was fine for 2 weeks then....

The one night the wifi was off I assume and the next morning onavo stated that data usage was 300mb
I checked on mtn active and yep it chowed 300mb of data overnight

What happened and how to prevent it

Switch to prepaid.

It also happened to myself (but, luckily, it was on prepaid for me).

All was well, until I installed a facebook application - onavo was set to cut outgoing off at 100Mb - but the faceboob app merrily went and depleted my data bundle and remaining air time.

I wasn't impressed, but I was very, very glad that I had a prepaid SIM in, and not a contract SIM.

Said misbehaving faceboob application was escorted off my phone with great fanfare, and is now banished to the PC or the fondleslab.

As for Onavo, I now use it to monitor my bandwidth usage quickly - and also use the CellC USSD command to check on remaining airtime.

I do not understand how in this day and age the networks cannot lock your account once you go over. Sounds to me like they do not want to.
Yes yes I know I will get yelled at by the network reps here but it should be law that once you go over your limit, your account is soft locked.

I forgot to mention that onavo reckoned the culprit was "email" .....can't uninstall that

Unfortunately cannot be on prepaid at the moment

There is a setting for background data....what's the pros and cons of switching this off

It will deactivate push services ... so things like WhatsApp wont work.

I am on contract, so I provisioned myself on the FNB connect APN.

a) its cheaper
b) when the money runs out the bytes run out.
c) no surprises

Onavo reports that "Android+Others" uses the most for me. No idea what it downloads though...

Onavo, Settings, Data Usage Blocking threshold - set it ;)
Also good to make sure Your plan data as well as "mobile data blocking on domestic plans" are set.

Kinda useless having the monitor without a set limit.

You'll love this. I got the galaxy 10.1 on a R369pm contract with 2gb of data per month.
Now for the first three months you're not allowed to set a call limit on it, my bill was going over 600.

So eventually I call in to vodacom, they say they can put a call limit on but it doesn't always stop the data usage.
I asked why the hell not, the lady said something about the system taking time to register that the call limit had been reached??

This is odd because on my cell phone when the call limit is reached I get locked out instantly. But my tablet could still go 200 over the call limit.

The reason that the service providers allow this, is the obvious one. They get to cash in.

Had this set but obviously didn't work :(
