Just looked at my phone bill and was shocked to see that my bill was R800 more than usual, all thanks to OOB rates. Is there any way to hardcap my account so when the allocated bandwidth runs out it stops? I was using the ICS/JBs built in Bandwidth monitoring/limit feature but between re-installs the limit got cleared.

OOB helps vodacom's bottom line, don't see them removing that legit income soon. Just go prepaid, even better go cellc prepaid.

I'm sure ockie will help you, he's apparently real helpful around these here parts :p

If you pay for a monthly data package bolted on to your contract, and it runs out, do you automatically go into OOB rates?
Should there not be at least an early warning system via sms that kicks in when your data is running low?

If non of this is in place then curses to the operators who don't enforce it.

I got impatient again and got my S3 with a 250MB bundle bolted on right at the beginning of June (just before the S3 was officially released IIRC) so I'm in a 24 month contract :( Vodacom SMS me warnings when it's running low but then go quiet once I've hit the cap.

I get a message 3MB before I reach my cap and once again when I reach my cap, "costs are now being deducted from your call account". Not sure how so many fall prey.

There is. For years already.

That's on prepay. On postpay (where you only really run into OOB) , you'll get at 70%, 90%, 100%.

The last SMS is at 100%. Would you suggest another SMS every so many MBs? Could work.

I get an SMS every morning with my current invoice amount.
I have an advanced data bundle, pay 24c out of bundle rates.

Advanced is the ultimate way to not get bill shock. I designed it for this reason and it's weird that more people don't use it.

Its the fact that people "are always connected" and competing with BIS that creates this problem.
All those apps running in the background adds up.

If the providers can't hard cap you there should be at least an app/phone setting that does this.

There is, on your phone go to mobile network, mobile data and turn it off.
