Major business data breach in South Africa

Govchain, a tax preparation firm offering online registration and compliance services to businesses in South Africa, has suffered a data breach, and it says the incident may have compromised customers' personal information.

This is according to an email sent to customers and shared with MyBroadband. The company said it detected a potential security breach involving one of its cloud storage databases on 23 December 2024.

Hmmm. Sounds like the hackers had access for well over 3 weeks. Now we wait for the cyber security experts who manage whole teams to jump in and explain why the whole team who buy subscriptions to security software didn't pay for some other subscriptions to detect this specific vulnerability.

I will not be surprised if they use the same security consultants as CIPC - who saves customer passwords in plain text

One of my customers got wiped out apparently lost a few hundred thousand FNB said they'd have it resolved by Next week. so here to my customer getting their money back from FNB

Where do you get this 3 weeks? And yes it was detected as mentioned in the article.

From the article:

A MyBroadband reader and Govchain customer who wishes to remain anonymous said scammers impersonating FNB employees have been harassing them since late November 2024.

“I have had four different calls from them from 30 November, but the cell number they called from and their failure to ask the usual bank security questions gave the game away immediately,” they said.

The Govchain breach might be completely unrelated to the MyBroadband reader's FNB and personal information being in the hands of criminals.

Syndicates pay bank employees for information about bank customers that can later be used in phishing and other criminal activity.
