Government condemns child protestors

Using children in protests violates their human rights, acting Government Communications and Information System head Phumla Williams said on Wednesday.

Government was concerned that there seemed to be a trend of using children as human shields during protests, she said in a statement.

"This is a violation of fundamental human rights that may hinder children's development, potentially leading to lifelong psychological damage.

"We, therefore, urge parents who involve children in destroying public property and committing violence during protests to refrain from such behaviour."

A number of teenagers allegedly led a group of Bronkhorstspruit protesters who wanted to set a police station and municipal offices alight. Residents have been protesting since Thursday about the high price of electricity.

Williams said when children participated in protests it placed their education in jeopardy.

"While every citizen has the constitutional right to protest, it is unacceptable when property and valuable public infrastructure are destroyed during protests."

That's what they are afraid of. Sharpeville happened because a young untrained constable panicked and opened fire, after which everyone started shooting. Those days the police recruiting vans would be waiting at the schools on the day the Matrics received their results.
Our current generation of officers seems to be just as untrained and just as likely to open fire. What they don't need is a modern day Hector Petersen running down the road with a wounded kid in his arms. This country would explode.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I recall the soweto uprising had little to nothing to do with the ANC itself, it was more of an independant (or ANCYL?) driven. I do not believe it was an ANC tactic back then so this statement doesnt contradict the ANC of the past.

But the ANC is now on the otherside of the protests, and they know the trouble, ethical problems and political power children bring when they are shot by police. They are pre-emptively trying to get this under control before it turns bad for them.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I recall the soweto uprising had little to nothing to do with the ANC itself, it was more of an independant (or ANCYL?) driven. I do not believe it was an ANC tactic back then so this statement doesnt contradict the ANC of the past.

But the ANC is now on the otherside of the protests, and they know the trouble, ethical problems and political power children bring when they are shot by police. They are pre-emptively trying to get this under control before it turns bad for them.

The ANC were certainly quick to claim credit.

The violent service-delivery protests gripping the country took a deadly turn yesterday when protesters turned on neighbours who defied them or were suspected of being police informers.

Why your logic is flawed

You don't stand a chance in hell if you don't join the protest action. Either join or your house gets burned down, or you get killed. So these parents will not adhere to those calls. In fear of their lives and their children.
