Sorry, posted this in the wrong category. Don't know how to close/move the thread.

If I use my GPRS-capable cellphone as a USB modem on my laptop, it tells me it connects at 230.4 kbps. But my NetActivity diagram tells me it runs at a max of 8kb. And judging by the transfer speeds, it seems more like 8kb than 230kb. Which one is correct? And why would the GPRS transfer so slowly (latency?)?

If I use my built-in dial-up modem connected to a Telkom landline, it tells me 44 to 52 kbps. And the transfer is significantly faster than the GPRS "modem". Why this?

The connection speed Windows reports to you are NOT your internet connection speed as with Dialup. The reported speed is just your connection speed between your pc and your phone(modem).

This speed can be set by yourself. You can set is as low as 1200bps or as high as 921600bps. Your setting is just set at 203400bps and does not show your real internet speed. Just go and have a look at your phone(modem) settings: http://img88.imageshack.us/my.php?image=modemspeedov0.jpg

Your dialup speed is about 44 to 52 kbps, but GPRS is supposed to be round about 85 kbps. Your GPRS is supposed to be faster, but if I understand you correctly you’re not experiencing this. Your GPRS could be slower than your dialup due to the fact that your GPRS is a wireless connection. Connection strength, distance from tower, weather etc etc…to a great extent affects GPRS speeds, while dialup is a wired connection and is not affected by this.

Hope this helped and that you understand now. andreasrothe, you can just ask one of the admins to move the thread for you. Don’t worry, they wont bite :P
