Google will ship turn-by-turn navigation to Google Maps on Android in the near future, but unfortunately cant give you an exact date.
Hang in there Pooky, otherwise you'll be spending a lot of cash on GPS software!
I installed it too, but havent had to drive anywhere yet. Finds directions fine and looks pretty good (plus there's map caching), but I'm not sure how good the turn by turn is.

You preferring the Hero to the iPhone? I've considered swapping mine but iPhone gives me too much atm.
I like it because it is faster. I'm not sure about the iPhone 3GS, but I had he 3G and it got really laggy...
The Hero is really responsive especially when overclocked with custom ROMS, and the apps are pretty cool too. I would say the iPhone has better apps, but I am enjoying the HTC Hero.

This was the only thing stopping me from getting a android phone - not having a cool gps like garmin xt mobile on the android - but from looking at some of the apps above, looks like its time to upgrade!
I must say the GPS Apps I tried on my iPhone were much better than the Android one's I have tried....
Would love either TomTom or Navigon for Android.
I've been on holiday in Cape Town and have been using Google Navigation on my Desire and TomTom on my TyTN II at the same time. The Desire finds satellites WAY quicker than the TyTN II.
They work differently when inputting your destination. Patience is required for both.
I like TomTom because it isn't very verbose. The Google Navigation talks too much for me, too many confirmations of the route, much like the Mio satnav which I couldn't give away fast enough.
I am satisfied that I could work with just the Google Navigation. It's very accurate, but I will really miss Ozzy Osborne's voice

When you say Google Navigation, i assume this is not the standard google maps, and includes turn bu turn navigation. How do i get it, do i have to enable the paid market, and/or root?
Should probably have labelled my links a little better. What you want is Brut's Navigation hack. Link is in my post, no root required, works great.
Just search on the xda developers forum for brut desire. You do not need to root your phone or have access to the paid market. it actually works very well, even the text-to-speech for street names, except it makes me laugh out loud every time it says "doctor" instead of "drive" when the road is called "xxxxxx Dr)
