Is a GPS cellphone any good for finding your way around a city like Cape Town?

Yes, definitely. Obviously voice navigation makes it more usable while driving, so Nokia maps will do the job if you have voice. Otherwise I have Garmin on mine and it gets me everywhere I need to go.

Right now I'm using my Garmin x10 mobile bluetooth in Cape Town on a Nokia N73 and it has helped a ton. Cape Town is no fun for this small town boytjie despite the fact that I spent 6 months driving for Navalbase Simonstown some 16 years ago.

In my opinion, best GPS handset ever made is Nokia 6110 Navigator. Easy to use and very accurate

I second that. The best feature is the voice navigation is free, unlike with the N95 where you have to pay for a subscription.

Thank you for your input. I am also a small town boy from Stilfontein and now live in Cape Town. I will get a second hand Nokia 6610.

Does it use airtime when using the GPS?

Hey - I've spent 3 months in stilfontein - my sympathies man... we spent many hours playing on the min dumps pretending it was table mountain lol.

My Garmin x10 does not use GPRS for navigation.

Tomato, I worked 7 years at Chemwes Uranium in sleepy Stilfontein. Grew up in a place called Allanridge. Now this is the ultimate small town. Beat you there.

Wow... 7 years lol...
Yep - love that little 'shopping center' in town. I was at a YWAM base near one of the mines - buffalo comes to mind for some reason. It rains permanently in one of the streets from the steam emerging from the shaft - lots of fun lol.

That was back in 1994-ish. At the time there had been a dry spell and the place was crawling with mice and rats. We used to have fun catching them and lobbing them over the roof then running to the other side of the dorm to see where they landed. Very Christian thing to do - reduce the plague :D

I remember my one top frozen on the line after washing it and leaving it overnite - stiff as a board lol

Another nod for the Nokia 6110 Navigator. Great phone, especially if you get Garmin Mobile XT on it.
