GPS from towers-MTN, MTNLOADED???

When will MTN implement assisted GPS tracking on their network?
This is used by applications such as Google maps, Nokia maps when position info is broadcast by towers and triangluation is calculated by application as to "where am I?"

Most networks in Europe and USA have this GPS postioning broadcasted from their towers for quite a while now...

C'mon MTN lets have it

I am running on the MTN network using an Iphone on which I installed a package called LocateMe. . This package receives from the towers info on its location and then calculate an approximate position that is then displayed on Google Maps on the Iphone. This is working on MTN but not on Vodacom. So it seems that MTN have loaded the info in their towers.

The info is however sometimes incorrect. When arriving from London at OR Tambo airport 3 weeks ago, my position was indicated as Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands. The majority of locations is within 1 km of where I am accept for the problem at the airport and one other station that gave an address in Benin.

MTN must ensure that the info is 100% correct as this will help a lot.

MTN does not support AGPS and currently has no specific plans to do so. This could change if we believe there is a reason to do so. The number of GPS enabled handsets is increasing so we will definitely need to consider AGPS support.

I also have Iphone, and now noticed after travelling around that some towers have the correct info and the majority not

Please MTN rectify this!!!

It wont be GPS it can only tell you the area you in.... If theres one tower in the Karoo you could be anywhere within a radius of 10 square kilometers.

What good will that do?

when trying out my TYTN2 with Google maps, and going to locate me, it did 'say' "using the cellphone network's towers", and it located me on the map, in a wide area so to speak, wasn't spot on, but had the area correct. (the phone's GPS was not activated, so I dunno how else it could know where I am, if not by using the towers)
but this method is very unreliable, and doesn't work most the time.
would be nice, to see where friends/family are....

AFAIK, Assisted GPS (A-GPS) and "using the cellphone network's towers" or "Network based" (Nokia's terminology) are two different technologies.
My understanding of A-GPS is that it sends the "Network based" information back to a server (via 3G or GPRS) which then replies with satellite information for that location, so that your device's GPS can get a quicker fix.
