Which is the best COST effective upgradable unit at what price?
Just traveled with car Salesman with Garmin Quest SA R6500.00 and it is great! but pricey?

Pupa,

Consider a Garmin 60csx/ in my opinion.

I have the 60cs. Have had it for 2 years and no problems at all. Execellent quality and with an automount, you can use it in the car as well as out on the trail, bike, boat, etc. I bought mine in the states when they first came out, thus did not have SA maps in it. But made my own for the WC and it has served me well for the past year here in SA.

With the x series you can expand the memory, which you might want depending on the amount of maps you store in the sucker. Plus, you can upload custom made maps for whatever you want/need. (check link in signature ;) )

I would stay away from the dashboard units, and the car nav units are fine but not as versatile as the outdoor units. Plus.... SA Geocaching hint..hint..hint. I go by vespax as well.

You can find SA GPS store ads through my website. Any more advice, let me know.

if you're looking at the quest range, rather get the quest 2. It has the waypoint proximity warning which basically warns you when you are approaching the waypoint. eg. You could load all the speed cameras and be warned 400m before you see them. The new Nuvi's also include this feature.

The mapping software is updated by garmap.co.za so check their site and forum for any other FAQs

The big problem with names like Garmin is that the South African maps only gets updated about once in three years if you are lucky. If you can get hold of a device that can run the Handymap (http://www.handymap.co.za) software you will be assured of a very up-to-date database. This software is developed by Business Connexion SA, and you get free updates for the life of the product which happens twice a year.

I have had a Garmin Quest unit for three years now and while it certainly is a great product, should I want to update the map database, I will have to fork out a substantial amount of money.

I would definitely recommend a Nuvogo (http://www.egadget.co.za/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=68)
If you really want upgradeability, I would then recommend a PDA with built-in GPS like the Fujitsu-Siemens N560 (http://www.computerstore.co.za/computer-store-specifications.php?products=2552)

The upgrade for the garmap software is around R700 which isnt to bad considering the amount of new data. I wouldnt bother with unknown brands. Its either garmin or magellan. Both are reliable, accurate and can be trusted.

JayT,

You have to have tested all of the available GPS software (that features SA Maps) to be objective. Handymap is definitely reliable and even more so than the Garmap/Mapsend software. It even has features like speed trap warnings which none of the others have. The free updates also makes it more cost effective when you take in to regard that the other software costs even more to purchase and then you have to pay again for the updates.

The above obviously only applies in SA. If you are taking the GPS to Europe or the US I agree fully with you.

I was shown the various options and products when I bought my garmin quest last year. I needed it to cater for more than one delivery at a time and the garmin products came out tops. But then again, this is only my opinion and perhaps I wasnt shown the better other choices out there
