This may be a dumb question but can maps from different gps systems be used on other gps systems ? Example can I on my HTC Desire use Garmin maps with Navigon ? Can maps be converted ? Thank you

Short answer: no.
Long answer: nnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooo.

The exact composition of the maps are pretty much proprietary to each company. Whilst there are only really 2 providers of mapping data - TeleAtlas and Navteq - each company produces their own maps from the data. There are a few exceptions; for instance, you can convert 3rd party Garmin maps (like those supplied by Tracks4Africa) to a format that Navitel can read, but it just isn't worth the hassle.

I've googled my fingers numb on this. Don't bother.

Try the gmap software or gps babel. Garmin maps are locked. T4A can be converted to most formats. Mapedit is another sw map converter.
