Not sure if this is the right spot to place this but does anybody have any experience in extracting points of interest from GARMIN or Google maps or something?

I to create a list of hospitals in South Africa with their GPS coordinates or at the very least postal codes. Google maps gives a great list of close to all of them i think but only at 10 a page... thats a lot of saving and merging.

Any ideas would be great

AFAIK those services were put together and stored in such a manner that makes it very impractical to try and export it for the very reason that you are trying to do.

That is intellectual property, they spent a lot of time putting the maps together and they don't want someone to take their work and use it for their own gain ( Imagine if you could export the entire map database from google earth or garmin maps; you could create your own gps software and sell it using their work. )

IMHO the best way to go about it would be to offer to buy it from the folks at Garmin, they will most likely have an unencrypted system that they can give you info from.

Yes I hear you Bullzeye, but I'm talking emergency services here and i have a garmin, i just want it in a different format :)

I phoned the National Hospital Network and i couldn't believe they wanted to charge me for the information, i mean at worst i would be directing people to their hospitals!

Maps used to be priceless a few hundred years ago...... not much has changed.....I guess there will always be a price for knowledge..... makes sense, but for saving lives? ):
