I bought myself a Garmin Nuvi 1410 yesterday, & I'm quite happy with the device itself. One thing I can't help but notice is that there's no software for it you install on the PC, something that'll let you synch data between the computer and the device, for things like the routes used, travel times & distance, allowing you to create & edit waypoints & so on on the PC, and then upload them to the device.

I've had a look with google, and all I've found so far is the Garmin Mobile PC app, but that seems to be an app that lets you duplicate the gps display on the notebook, which is useful I'm sure, but I'm looking more for an app that lets you use the GPS as an accessory for the PC.

If anyone has any suggestions as to a suitable app, I'd appreciate it :)

EDIT

I'd also appreciate it if a mod could correct the spelling mistake in the title of this tread - I really should have at least 2 cups of coffee before trying to drive the PC :/

You're looking for MapSource, but the 1410 can't sync routes so it's not really worth the hassle.

Thanks for the quick reply :)

It's a pity it I can't synch routes, but it'll still be useful to be able to connect the two devices I'm sure.

Map source actually let's your laptop become a huge GPS screen. Nice but not always practical to drive with it.

I've got a Nuvi 200 which doesn't have any fancy features. I would also have loved to do route planning etc on the laptop/desktop and transfer that to the GPS. Also, the ability to backtrack your route would be cool. I'll make sure that when my Nuvi 200 breaks, I'll spend the money and get a more advanced version. Mmmmmm....what if it fall off the table and....

My mate has a 1410 as well - we spent a few hours buggering about with it, his laptop and a bit of *cough* creatively acquired software *cough* a couple of weekends ago. Far as I recall, you can sync waypoints and not much more. You do of course need MapSource if you want to replace the maps on your device, and it is always nice to be able to browse maps on the lappie.

Fantastic, I'll try pick one up this week sometime, thanks very much :)

Be careful when you download maps to your gps via Mapsource it delets the files on your GPS rather send the files to your sd card. There was a very good thread about Garmin GPS on this forum, read it for all you need to know.
